08/21 Braz, Austria to Flin, Switzerland via Liechtenstein

When we got up this morning it was a little cloudy. While we were packing, dark clouds came over and the wind started blowing. By the time I got downstairs with our gear, it was pouring. After about fifteen minutes, the rain let up.

We packed our gear in the car, got our raincoats on, and headed over to breakfast a half block away. When we got there, the tables were all soaked, but they had moved the food inside. When we came out, the rain had stopped and the skies were clearing fast. Ten minutes later, we were on our bike ready to go, and it was clear and sunny.

We asked Larry to pick us up at 2:30ish. He was going to do an out and back from camp. Joan hadn't decided yet what she wanted to do today.

We had a beautiful ride! Still in the Alps. The road is almost never flat -- always up or down. Once in a while it's STEEPLY up or down. We go much faster up the hills than we used to, and, usually, a little more slowly down the hills than we used to.

Why faster up hill? Simply because we're stronger and in better shape.

Why slower down hill?

Safety. If the road is smooth, dry, clean and visible for a long way ahead, we can go 50 mph in relative safety. But usually, one or more of those criteria are not met -- thus, we go more slowly down these hills then we did at home.

We rode through the Alps and through many small, quaint alpine towns. Almost every town has a ski lift of some sort. Some riders even took time to ride a tram up for the view. We were content with the many beautiful vistas that we saw from the top
